Getting Started with In-Home Aged Care
Starting to think about aged care can feel overwhelming. There are different programs, pathways and funding options, and knowing where to begin is often the hardest part.
Which situation describes you?

I want low-level help to stay independent at home
Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) provides entry-level government funded support for people who need some help.

I (or someone I care for) needs more comprehensive support
Support at Home is the Australian Government’s main in-home aged care program, with multiple funding levels based on assessed need.

I want flexibility or can’t access government funding
Private Services are arranged directly through CatholicCare. Useful while waiting for funding, supplementing existing services or short-term support.
Do I need government funding to get help?
No. If you’d prefer to arrange support privately, or if you need help while waiting for an assessment or funding approval, CatholicCare’s Private Services can be arranged directly without any government involvement.
How do I access government-funded aged care?
Both CHSP and Support at Home are accessed through My Aged Care, the Australian Government’s central point for aged care information and assessments.
Step 1.
Contact My Aged Care
Call 1800 200 422 or visit myagedcare.gov.au to register. You can also register online. A family member, carer or friend can contact My Aged Care on your behalf with your consent.
Step 2.
Screening
My Aged Care will ask some initial questions about your situation to understand what kind of support you might need. Based on this, they’ll refer you for an assessment.
Step 3.
Assessment
An assessor will meet with you (usually at home) to talk about your daily life, what you’re finding more difficult, your health, and your goals. The assessment is a conversation, not a test. You can have a family member or friend with you.
Following the assessment, you’ll receive a summary of your needs, goals and recommended supports, along with your funding eligibility.
Step 4.
Choose your provider
Once approved for funding, you choose a registered aged care provider to deliver your services. You’re not locked in — you can change providers at any time if your needs or preferences change.
Tips for getting started
Before you start:
- You don’t need to be in crisis to start exploring. Planning ahead means supports can be in place before things become urgent.
- Check what other supports you might be eligible for. Some people may also be eligible for supports through the NDIS, DVA, or state-based programs depending on their circumstances.
- Keep a record of what you need help with. Before your assessment, it can be useful to jot down the things you’re finding more difficult day to day, even small things. This helps the assessor get an accurate picture.
During the process:
- Involve your family or support network. Having someone with you during the assessment and decision-making process can help make sure nothing gets missed.
- Ask questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question when it comes to aged care. Our team is here to help you make sense of it all.
Things to know:
- Assessment wait times can vary. If you need support in the meantime, Private Services may be a good option to bridge the gap.
- You have the right to choose your provider. Take the time to find a provider that feels right for you and your family.
